We moved into our Costa Blanca re-sale home, and for 5 months (admittedly part of which were the winter months, which could partly explain the fact) never saw a single cockroach - then the local Spanish council (sometime in spring) sent out some workmen to spray the sewage drains (for some reason unbeknown) ... well it seemed la cucaracha were the target.

After this we were getting cockroaches outside the house & more worrying cockroaches inside the house. The spaying of the drains must have forced the cockroaches out and this is when the problem started, so naturally we needed a remedy that would eliminate these Spanish cockroaches.

These nasty cockroaches in Spain & elsewhere come in various types ...
From what I have read most people say that here in the Costa Blanca the German Cockroach is much more predominant. Not true : at least some of the cockroaches that we were getting could fly and the German cockroach cannot. Also ; the German cockroach measures only 15mm ours were bigger, so in my book that makes these Spanish Costa Blanca cockroaches that we were getting ... the American cockroach.

The cockroach is nocturnal, fast, agile, prefers dark damp areas and is most commonly found in countries with hot climates. A trail of chemicals is left in the cockroaches wake - which in turn produces bacteria on surfaces they have occupied and provides a guide for other cockroaches to sources of food and water. The cockroach has four wings the top pair acting as a protective armour. The sewage network here in Spain is an ideal breeding and ground for these cockroaches. It seems every year now the Spanish Council come to spray the sewer with some form of cockroach repellant, though our urbanisation is twenty years old.

The cockroach is one of the toughest forms of life living on Earth, needing very little food and air. Also a cockroach could stand around 10 times the radiation level which would kill a human.

Cockroach Elimination - terminating the Costa Blanca Roach

Covering sink holes - a must do if you are finding cockroaches inside the house.

The first step was to block every crevice which the roaches could possibly use to get inside the house; this was done ... the problem was we were still finding the cockroaches in the bathroom and the kitchen (no doubt using the drainage system to get in).

Sink holes are an obvious cockroach entry point into the casa and should be covered. The (above) left sink hole is "cockroach proof" - unless of course it is pulled out & left out. You can also buy stainless steel sink hole covers (at Domti) for other sink holes to keep out the cockroaches, but again .. if they are not over the hole - they are not going to work. Also depending on the age of your house - check the underside rim of the bath and make sure that the sealant has not come away or broke in places (another favorite casa cockroach entry point).
Basically - all casa cockroach entry or escape hatches have to be sealed ...
No Mas Claves works wonders ... or a simple tube of sealant ... block everything.

One cockroach cure we saw on YouTube showed wrapping an empty jam jar with masking tape (so that the cockroach can climb in) then putting water & coffee granules inside : this was supposed to be a good way to trap the cockroaches .. it was totally useless (maybe the cockroaches don't like Nescafe) - absolute rubbish - do not try this at home !! This apparently is called the Vegas Roach Crap (sorry - Trap), maybe they don't work in Spain.

Then a friend (David) told us about another cockroach cure which was supposed to work wonders, but gathering the ingredients in Spain for this cockroach poison was rather difficult, we eventually got there with a little help (thanks Elise), but starch is rather difficult to find in Spain.

The Spanish cockroach killer mixture cure : as follows ....

Powdered Boric Acid - 240g (available at any Spanish Farmacy)
Onion liquefied in a blender (add no water) - 200g
Starch - 20g
Wheat Flour (bread & cake ingredient) - 22g
Powdered Milk - 22.5g
Sugar - 30g

	The Cockroach Poison mixed & Rolled.

Mix everything thoroughly (rolling into balls is optional) - place onto a piece of newspaper and leave for 8 hours. Place the balls or pieces strategically in the bathroom & kitchen and outside the house (being careful about pets and children) ...

This Spanish cockroach poison really does work .. BUT you need to keep making the mixture EVERY year ... around the end of May .. just before the cockroaches start to appear in your Spanish casa.
