Biking / Cycling in Guardamar information ...

Bicycle sales, cycle hire and cycle repair centre - with delivery and collection.

Biking is a great way to get around Guardamar - with many great biking routes available ....
Park Alfonso has biking routes to the Marina, and the River Segura has cycle pathways leading to Rojales.
Pretty soon there will be cycle lanes on the N332 all the way to Torrevieja.

Unfortunately the local Guardamar Bikes on the Plaza Porticado has closed down. BUT ...
A bike / cycle shop has now opened in Guardamar (Sept 2011).
The bicycle shop is located on the corner of Lepanto & La Paz.

The shop sells new bikes and all related biking accessories.
The Cycling Shop is called Bicicletaria - more details to follow ...
Bike Hire here is 12 euro per day or 70 euro per week.

El Refugio is a bit out in the wilderness - but is a Restaurant and also offers accommodation (including whole horse riding holiday packages), and equestrian pursuits - located close to the Laguna de La Mata (between Guardamar and Torrevieja).

Fishing in Guardamar information ....

Sea fishing is a keen Guardamar del Segura pastime (the town after all, was once a fishing village) - the area around the river Segura mouth seems very popular, as does the small tributary which runs parallel on the north side of the river (this is marked on our Google Earth Map). According to a person at the tourist information desk, no license is needed to fish from the shore or the mouth of the river. There is a Fishing Shop on the main Major road (just before Plaza del Labradores) on the right hand side of this road (Jorge Gimenez - Pesca Sport Fishing), which will of course offer more information for those fishing addicts among you.

As for travelling around the Costa Blanca by bus - we would strongly recommend the hiring of a car as the superior option (and we will not insult your intelligence by "recommending" any companies - there are so many).
Unless you can speak fluent Spanish - it is very difficult to get information about bus times at the Guardamar Bus Station. Unless you are prepared to wait (as the buses seem few and far between in the off peak season - and in the peak season would definitely be liable to delays) car hire is always the the sensible option..
But ... if the Autobuses are your only option - then, the only "factual" information we can give are these two timetables obtained from the Guardamar Bus Station ... Please do not E Mail us with any requests for Guardamar Bus times .. as stated the best option to get around the area is car hire ... if you cannot do that ... and insist on public transport ... please phone the Guardamar bus depot 965729126 if you can speak Spanish ... or contact the Guardamar Tourist Info Centre if you do not speak Spanish or hire a cycle when you get here.

Spain's Train Network is run by Renfe.

The nearest place to find a train station by our reckoning is Callosa de Segura (distance of 25.2Km according to Autoroute), but perhaps the better option would be Orihuela 32.6Km.

There is however a tourist "train" which tours the roads of Guardamar del Segura - this only happens however mid-June to beginning of September (and may only be on certain days in the week) - the "train" runs from Engineer Mira all through Guardamar del Segura and if you can't ride a bicycle and are not up to really long walks then this a great way to get around and see a lot more of Guardamar del Segura.
This tourist train is also used on the Guardamar Path of History tours.

The big four supermarkets in Guardamar are Masymas, Mercadona, Lidl and the new Carrefour Express (soon to open in the old Dialprix premises - which did not last too long after replacing the Dia supermarket).

The Carrefour Express should give Mercadona a run for their money where others have failed to dent their domination .. perhaps. The Carrefour Express opened 13th July 2011 and will open from 09.00 to 23.00 mon - sat.

Although Masymas supermarket is not as central as Mercadona, it stocks more of a choice than Spanish only brands, which tends to be the case at Mercadona.

Mercadona is always closed on Sunday - Masymas sometimes opens on a Sunday ... not sure if it is all year round.

The supermarkets are always closed on bank holiday (red days) - but there is a mini mart (Dicost Supermercado - Los Gemelos) located in Blasco Ibanez which is open every day ... including Sunday mornings and Bank Holidays.

The Guardamar wednesday market is held close to the Town Hall and Church.

In the summer months (afternoon, evening and night) the Inginero Mira is lined with Market Stalls selling all kinds of things.

The two markets held in Guardamar itself are pinpointed on our detailed map of Guardamar.

There is also a Market held at Le Mata on Wednesday (4Km south of Guardamar del Segura and left off the N332).

On Sunday there is the Lemon Tree Guardamar Market, left off the Montesinos road (heading south from Guardamar approx 1.4Km on the N332, the Montesinos road is a right turn clearly marked) ...


The large furniture store [edit - name] at the bottom of the Lemon Tree Road has also started a small market on Tuesday and Saturday - no doubt aimed at boosting its furniture sales.

So if markets are your thing there is plenty choice in and around Guardamar.

There are around thirteen banks in Guardamar these are mostly located on the main high street Avenida Pais Valenciano / Mayor.

If you enter Guardamar from the N332 road along the main high street, the banks are : in order of location : Lloyds Internacional, Caja Murcia, Banco Popular, Caja Murcia (2), Caja Madrid, Bancaja, Santander, La Caxia, and BBVA.
We have found that the Banco Halifax does not charge for money transfers to or from the UK (if you have a UK Halifax bank account).

The banks are open from 09.00 till 14.00. Information : some of the bank cashiers (not all) will speak a "little" English.

The Post Office opening hours are :
Monday - Friday 08.30 to 14.30
Saturday 09.30 to 13.00 (nice hours !).
The Correos is closed on Sunday and all Bank Holidays (red days).
Stamps can be bought at any Tobacconist if you miss the Correos opening times.
The Post Office has recently been refurbished and the actual Post Box which used to be outside has been placed inside - meaning that outside the opening hours of the Correos ... no letters can be posted. There is a post box on the corner of Blasco Ibanez & Ausias March.

Guardamar del Segura car parks are marked on our detailed street map (see Map page), parking of cars is allowed on almost every street - especially in Jul/Aug - when it is difficult to find a car parking space (BUT avoid the yellow lines), we have not yet seen a traffic warden in Guardamar - but we HAVE regularly seen the Policia Local assisting the driver of a tow truck, where a car was parked on the yellow. The only advise we can give (through experience) is try to leave plenty of space between the cars around you when you park your car - it is not uncommon to see someone "ram" another car whilst trying to get out of a parking space .. so be warned. Also take car when parking along Avenida Cervantes ... parking is allowed on both sides of the road in some places ... absolutely crazy ... three times I have witnessed a large truck just barge between cars scraping and even pulling a car along, once with a camper van as well. When driving in Guardamar take care on the "smaller" road junctions, where the road markings are either, not marked, or very poorly marked.

The Parada de Taxis is marked on our Guardamar del Segura Map it is next to the bus station in Molivent St. You don't see very many taxis around at this Taxi Rank, and we would imagine it could be quite a struggle to get one on the spur of the moment in any other months than June,July or August. The numbers above obtained third party - so no guarantees ! - Taxi numbers obtained from Google are ...
