Many times when visiting Alicante we looked up to the Santa Barbara Castle & thought one day we would go up there, thinking it to be just another castle with a good view of the city of Alicante, and not really relishing the prospect of a hard climb for no reward (as sometimes these trips are) ... When we finally got around to visiting Alicante Castle, the realization that you could drive up three quarters of the way and park the car was a great relief in itself ... but the climb to the castles summit was even more of a revelation ... this is one castle not in tatters & ruins, but a remarkable piece of history which has survived the years (with tender love & care) and now provides one hell of a day out for the many tourists who choose to take the time and energy to scale the castles heights. The views from any castle are spectacular (height always has that advantage) but the views of the beach and marina from Alicante's Santa Barbara Castle really are a sight to behold ...

From the N332 main road - you need to head into Alicante and navigate your way to the back of the castle ... and take the road (from Av Jamie II - red circle below) this will get you three quarters of the way up to the top of Alicante's Santa Barbara Castle - lots of people look at the castle from the beach side and try to get access to Alicante castle from that side - but there is no way up from there apart from the lifts in Avenida Jovellanos (at times out of order). The lift up to the Alicante castle is about half way along the Postiguet beach, and across the other side of the main road - the castle lift is shown on the map section below "Ascensor (Tunnel)", the charge for using the lift which incidentally will take you as far as the level above the car park is approx 2,70€. There is however, absolutely no charge for taking the car and parking the car in Alicante Castle car park, or for walking up to the castle from the access road Av. Jamie II (shown below).
