THEATRES, CONCERTS AND CULTURE INFORMATION ALICANTE ...
The Cultural side of Alicante.
In the summer months it is not unusual to see concerts and shows held at the entrance to the Alicante marina - its a great setting ... beneath the Santa Barbara Castle and by the side of the splendid marina. There is also a bandstand on the esplanade de España where bands hold concerts at times.
There are two theatres in Alicante the Teatro Principal - and Arniches Theatre.
Holiday Fiestas & Festivals information Alicante.
Festivals are a part of the Spanish culture and these spectacular processions are held all over the Costa Blanca Alicante Province, in different towns, on different festival days. Some festivals lasting a week or more. These festival "shows" are now part and parcel of the tourist calendar, a spectacle geared towards the Spanish tourist industry. With the amount of people involved in (for instance) the Guardamar del Segura festivities (the only one I have personally witnessed), one can only come to the assumption that (some of) the persons actually involved in the processions must be drafted in from town to town. The festivals tend to be focused on the main street of the town and go on for hours with parade after parade. It is a great first time visual display ... although one which tends to drag and be a little repetitive, all credit to those who take part in the processions, but ...
I guess what I'm trying to say here (kindly) is that the Spanish festivals are a sight to behold ... but ... once you've seen one ... you've (kind of) seen them all (IMHO).
For those with a little more enthusiasm (and time to spare) ... correct details of all Alicante fiestas and festivals can be obtained by E Mail from any of the Alicante Tourist Information Offices (listed above).
Special days in the Alicante Festival calendar are as follows ...
Hogueras de Sant Juan
held towards the last week of June 20th - 24th ... this is the Alicante city main fiesta - an ancient tradition of burning items that serve no purpose (usually cardboard effigies). Streets in Alicante are closed and there is a massive procession, culminating in a great fireworks displays (on the castle and on the main beach) and a bull fighting exhibition ...
The Hogueras de Sant Juan is definitely not to be missed if you are around, so I'm told.
Language NOTE - "Hogueras de Sant Juan" is "Fogueras de Sant Joan" in the Valencian language.

On the second Thursday after Easter Sunday a pilgrimage is held from the city of Alicante to the Santa Faz monastery.

This church is open to the public - check with any of the Alicante Tourist Info offices as to the times.
Concatedral de San Nicolás de Bari - The patron saint of Alicante is San Nicolás - thus this is one of the most important religious churches in the city of Alicante. The cathedral was built somewhere around 1645 in the Spanish baroque style, the outside of the church is very plain, but historically this is one of Alicante's most important religious establishments. The San Nicolás Cathedral is open to the public - check with any of the Alicante Tourist Info offices as to the times. [edit - when been]
